Check out our interview with the Hungry Lumberjack.

Our question: Do you support the implementation of a levy for the University of Ottawa English Debating Society at the rate of $0.50 per semester for each full time undergraduate student and $0.25 per semester for each part time undergraduate student?

Welcome to the English Debating Society's referendum campaign website!

The English Debating Society (EDS) is the oldest is the oldest student organisation on campus, celebrating our 130th anniversary this year.

Our Society has an enthusiastic and active current membership, as well as an impressive list of alumni. This includes Alex Trebek, University of Ottawa President Allan Rock, Senator Hugh Segal, MP Mauril BĂ©langer, former NDP Chief of Staff Anne McGrath, and the 2009 winner of Canada's Next Great Prime Minister, Amy Marlene Robichaud Harpe.

We hold meetings every Tuesday and Wednesday at 5:30pm in Simard 125. As part of our meetings, we host seminars on topics such as international law, the "social contract", feminism, epigenetics, public speaking, and many other important subjects. We debate in both the Canadian Parliamentary and British Parliamentary styles of debate within the Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate (CUSID). We give EDS members, and all who wish to attend our meetings, the chance to exercise not only public speaking skills, but other academic skills such as critical thinking, in a fun and challenging environment.

We are active members of the University community and enjoy sharing our passion for debate with others in various forms, including hosting public debates on topical issues, organizing tournaments, and hosting documentary nights. We are a non-partisan and inclusive group, welcoming students from all faculties.

We invite you to join our referendum facebook page and to stop by a meeting or any of our campus events to meet our members and ask questions*!
